My first experience of an autumn in the USA was in early November 2005. At the time, I was near the small town of Centralia, PA, investigating the underground mine fire that had been burning since the 1960s. With my digital camera, I was busy snapping photos of the land and surrounding area, including tree lined landscapes. I remember thinking that something seemed different in the photos I had just taken. At first I couldn't quite figure out why, but it soon dawned on me that the colour of the trees were different to the colour of trees back in the UK at this time of year.
Autumn in the UK, for me anyways, had always been a time of greens, yellows, dark reds and browns. Never before had I seen the bright and beautiful, almost fluorescent, reds, oranges and yellows that would surround you at this time of the year in this part of the world.
Since then, my fascination with autumn colours in the USA has continued and in the autumn seasons of 2010 and 2011, I decided to capture some of these wonderful colours in order to illustrate my point.
This collection of Autumn images is taken from my photo book, 'Autumn Leaves in Maryland and Pennsylvania'.
